Dialing 2-1-1 connects callers to specialists who assess their needs and link them to the right solutions using a comprehensive database of federal, state and local services - both government and nonprofit. 2-1-1 cuts through the confusion and helps callers connect to the service they need. For example, it helps with information about these kinds of resources:
• Basic Human Needs
• Physical and Mental Health
• Employment Support
• Support for Older Americans and Persons with Disabilities
• Support for Children, Youth and Families
• Volunteer Opportunities and Donations
Similar to dialing 9-1-1 for emergency assistance, Marylanders now can get important information regarding local health and human services by calling 2-1-1. The launch of Maryland’s pilot program for the new dialing code was announced October 11, 2006 at United Way of Central Maryland’s First Call for Help™ center.
“Many Marylanders who need help never get connected to the resources they need,” said United Way’s President Larry Walton. “Now with 2-1-1 coverage of more than 70 percent of the state, residents of Maryland who need help will be able to speak to trained call specialists who can assess their needs, identify resources and refer them to the appropriate social service agencies for help.”
2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember telephone number that connects callers to local community service and volunteer opportunities 24 hours a day. Maryland has four 2-1-1 pilot centers – First Call For Help in Baltimore; Community Crisis Services, Inc. In Hyattsville; Life Crisis Center in Salisbury; and Frederick County Mental Health Association in Frederick – that will give citizens one number to call when they need to access human services. 2-1-1 builds on the success of Maryland’s many information and referral lines.
2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember, free-to-the-user phone number that links people with
the health and human services they need. Currently, the service only works from Verizon
based land line phones. 2-1-1 is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in
more than 150 languages.
