if someone you know is suicidal, your ability to recognize the invitations and your willingness to do something about it could make the difference between life and death. Persons as risk for suicide have often offered invitations to ask about their intention to die by suicide.
These invitations can include:
- Lack of interest in activities and interpersonal relationships
- Changes in appetite
- Changes in sleep patterns
- Loss of energy
- Negative feelings about self
- Inability to concentrate
- Declining academic performance
- Depression or overwhelming sadness
- Statements of death, such as "I wish I were dead" or "They'll miss me when I'm gone"
Invitations will vary from person to person. However, keep in mind that anyone can be at risk for suicide when they have experienced a significant negative event that typically involves loss of some kind and ending pain.
