Come Join the 2020-2021 Hypothermia/Hyperthermia Shelter Program

We're here to answer your questions

What is the Cold and Warm Weather Program?

The Hypothermia/Hyperthermia Program is a faith-based emergency shelter program. It rotates weekly to faith based organizations throughout Prince George’s County. Homeless women, children and men are sheltered from 6:30 PM until 7:00 AM. The Prince George’s County Department of Social Services contracted vendor is Community Crisis Services, Inc. (CCSI).

What support would your organization have as a participant in this program?

Paid staff or trained volunteers are provided for the entire 12-hour period.  Staff includes the Shelter Manager, Asst. Shelter Coordinator, shelter support workers, case manager and van drivers. Staff will register guests, coordinate services, and handle emergencies that may arise. Case manager provides intensive case management including linkage to and drop off sites for medical and mental health providers. Van drivers provide guest transportation from designated pick up locations.

If you want to host, but believe your membership is too small, what can you do?

Provide your facility for use of shelter purpose only. You may also ask other churches to join with you to assist with meals and/or other services.

Will training be provided to teach you about the Hypothermia Program operation?

Yes. CCSI will provide a training session covering all the information you need to have a successful week.  (Activities, special guest, etc.)

If you participate, what would be your responsibilities?

You should be prepared to shelter 25-35 people overnight for one week.

You would need to designate a coordinator – a point of contact to make sure the week of sheltering goes smoothly. Overnight church volunteers are welcome but not necessary.

Space is needed for at least 25 cots, which are provided. Churches use their fellowship halls, youth facilities, sanctuaries and other areas to host the guests.

As a host church, you are asked to provide your guests with a hot meal for the evening, breakfast and bag lunch. (breakfast can range from a full course meal to continental)

Laundry for guest’s to wash their personal belongings on any given night.  CCSI will help with transportation to and from laundromat if needed.

Clients are not required to participate in any religious practices, services or organizations.

Any client participation is voluntary and optional.
